What is Huma?

Huma is an HR platform that brings together everything you need to manage your people in one place. From employee profiles and absence management to documents, onboarding, and salary. Huma gives HR administrators a complete overview and full control, without the need for spreadsheets or separate systems.

As an administrator, you are responsible for setting up and maintaining Huma for your organisation. This article gives you a quick overview of how the system is built, so you know what to expect before you get started.

How Huma is built

Before you start setting things up, it helps to understand the four core concepts that everything in Huma is built around.

People and profiles

Every employee has a profile in Huma with all their relevant information; employment details, personal data, documents, absence history, and more. The profile is the foundation for everything else in the system.

Organisation structure

You organise your employees into groups, companies, teams, and locations. This structure reflects how your organisation actually works, and controls who can see and manage what.

Roles and access

Roles control what each user can see and do in Huma. There are four role types: system roles for administrators, user roles for managers and HR staff, the supervisor role for line managers, and standard roles that apply to all employees automatically.

Modules

Modules are the features you activate based on what your organisation needs, things like Absence, Documents, Onboarding, Salary, Surveys, and more. You choose which modules to turn on, and only those will be visible to your users.

These four concepts build on each other. Getting your organisation structure and roles right from the start makes everything else much easier.

What can you use Huma for?

Huma is more than a traditional HR system. Many organisations use Huma as a central hub for internal communication, document sharing, and employee engagement, in addition to core HR tasks.

Here are some examples of what you can do with Huma:

  • Share company news and updates with all employees or specific groups, just like an intranet

  • Store and share documents with the right people, with full access control

  • Get a complete overview of your organisation structure, employees, and reporting lines

  • Manage tasks across your organisation — from onboarding checklists to recurring HR processes

  • Track competence and certifications across your workforce

  • Run employee satisfaction surveys with eNPS or custom surveys

💡 Which features are available depends on which modules you have activated. You can turn modules on and off at any time in System settings.
