What are custom holiday calendars?
Custom holiday calendars let you add company holidays, closure days and other non-working days that the public holiday calendars don't cover. Examples are Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve or a summer closure.
You add the dates to a calendar and assign the calendar to one or more work schedules. Everyone on those work schedules then gets the dates as non-working days.
💡 Note
- A custom holiday calendar comes in addition to the public holiday calendar on the work schedule. It doesn't replace it.
- A custom holiday calendar isn't tied to a country. You can assign the same calendar to work schedules in different countries.

Create a calendar
- Go to the Absence module
- Navigate to "Settings"
- Under "Custom holiday calendars", click "Create calendar"
- Choose an icon and fill in the name
- Add a description if needed
- Click "Create"
- The calendar opens, and you can start adding dates.
⚠️ Everyone can see custom holidays in the absence calendar. Keep personal or sensitive details out of the calendar's name and the names you give its dates.
Add dates
- Open the calendar from Absence › Settings › Custom holiday calendars
- Click "Add date", or click a day in the year view
- Choose the date and add a name if needed
- Tick "Repeats every year" if the date should apply every year
- Click "Save"
💡 Note
- Each entry is one date. To add several days in a row, for example a week of closure, add one date for each day.
- A date always applies to the whole day. Half days aren't supported.
- "Repeats every year" only keeps the day and month. A recurring 29 February is skipped in years that aren't leap years.
- Use "Show holidays from…" to see public holidays in the year view. This only shows which days may already be days off. The public holidays aren't added to your calendar.
Assign the calendar to work schedules
A calendar has no effect until it is assigned to a work schedule. You can assign it in two ways.
From the calendar
- Open the calendar
- Click "Assign to work schedules"
- Pick one or more work schedules
- Click "Save"
From the work schedule
- Go to Absence › Settings › Work schedules
- Create a new work schedule, or edit an existing one
- Under "Custom holiday calendars", pick one or more calendars
- Click "Save"
💡 A work schedule can have several custom holiday calendars. You can change them at any time.
⚠️ Absence that is already registered isn't recalculated when you assign a calendar or add dates. See the next section.

How custom holidays affect absence
Custom holidays count as non-working days, just like public holidays. This means they:
- Aren't deducted from the absence balance
- Aren't counted when restrictions on a self-certification policy are counted in workdays
- Are left out of absence sent to integrations
⚠️ Changes only apply to absence registered from now on. Absence that is already registered keeps its number of days. It's updated only if the absence is edited later.
💡 Example: You add 24 December to a calendar after an employee has registered vacation from 22 to 31 December. The vacation still counts 24 December as a vacation day. If the absence is edited, it's recalculated and 24 December is no longer counted.

Custom holidays in the absence calendar
Custom holidays are shown in the absence calendar together with public holidays.
- Go to the Absence module
- Click "Calendar"
- Click "Holidays"
- Choose which public holidays and custom holidays to show
- Click "Done"
💡 Note
- The filter has two groups: "Public holidays" and "Custom holidays". Only calendars assigned to a work schedule are listed.
- By default, you see the public holidays for your country and the custom holidays on your own work schedule.
- Hover over a date to see which calendar it belongs to, and the name of the date.
Edit or delete
Edit a calendar
Open the calendar, click the three dots and select "Edit details". You can change the icon, name and description.
Edit or delete a date
Click the date in the year view and select "Edit" or "Delete".
Delete a calendar
Open the calendar, click the three dots and select "Delete".
⚠️ A calendar that is assigned to an active work schedule can't be deleted. Remove it from the work schedules first.
💡 Note
- If the calendar is only assigned to archived work schedules, Huma offers to remove it from them and delete it in one step. Click "Unassign and delete".
- Deleting a calendar or a date doesn't change absence that is already registered. The absence is recalculated if it is edited later.
