HR trends in 2023: Is AI taking the lead in recruiting and employee engagement?

With so many buzzwords and buzzphrases being thrown around, it can be hard to keep up. That's why I want to break down the top HR trends for 2023, and focus on both the human and not-so-human trends.

Ah, the future! It's always an exciting prospect, especially when it comes to Human Resource (HR) trends. We're all curious to see what the next few years will hold for us, and we're all looking for ways to stay ahead of the curve. But with so many buzzwords and buzzphrases being thrown around, it can be hard to keep up. That's why I want to break down the top HR trends for 2023 and focus on both the human and not-so-human trends.

First up, we have the shift to remote working. We all know that the pandemic has completely changed the way we work, and this trend looks set to continue into 2023 and beyond. Companies are increasingly recognizing the benefits of remote working, such as cost savings, increased flexibility, and improved employee engagement. So if you're looking to stay ahead of the curve, it might be time to start thinking about how you can make your business remote-friendly.

A second trend—and an important piece to supporting the ‘remote working’ point I made--is on the continued importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. This isn't just about checking a box or meeting a quota. It's about creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their background. This can include things like implementing diversity and inclusion training, creating employee resource groups, and actively seeking out diverse candidates for open positions.

Another trend we're seeing is the increasing importance of employee well-being. In today's fast-paced, technology-driven world (yeah, I know the irony given we sell technology), it's easy for employees to burn out. In 2023, we expect to see more organizations prioritizing the mental and physical health of their employees, offering programs and resources to help them maintain a healthy work-life balance. This could include things like flexible work schedules, meditation and mindfulness programs, and access to mental health services.

A trend in HR is also a shift away from traditional performance management systems. Many organizations are moving away from annual performance reviews and instead adopting more frequent, ongoing feedback and development processes. This allows employees to receive regular, constructive feedback and guidance, which can help them improve and grow in their careers. In 2023, we expect to see more organizations adopting this approach to performance management.

Of course, no discussion of HR trends would be complete without mentioning some of the ever-present buzzwords. In 2023, you can expect to hear a lot about things like "employee engagement," "talent management," and "cultural fit" (I already alluded to some above in my attempt to avoid too many buzzy trends 😅). While these buzzwords may sound impressive, it's important to remember that they're just that - buzzwords. The key is to focus on what they really mean and figure out how you can use them to create a better work environment for your employees.

Continuing down the list of big buzzwords there is of course automation. Automation has been a hot topic in the HR world for some time now, and the trend is only set to continue. Automation can help streamline processes and save time, allowing HR departments to focus on more strategic tasks. It's also incredibly beneficial for employees, as it can help reduce mundane tasks and increase efficiency.

Finally, we have the rise of artificial intelligence (AI)—the big brother of automation. AI is increasingly being used in HR departments, from recruiting to onboarding, to employee engagement. AI is a great tool for automating processes, improving decision-making, and providing data-driven insights. So if you're looking to stay ahead of the game, now is the time to start exploring how AI can help you optimize your HR processes.

In short, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year for HR professionals. Whether you're focused on employee wellness, diversity and inclusion, or the latest buzzwords like AI and automation, there's plenty to keep you busy. Just remember to approach everything with a sense of humor and in my opinion the ultimate goal is to remember to create a happy and healthy workplace for your employees.
